Description
DNA comparison. Comparison of 16 wheat (Triticum sp.) samples (horizontal bands) with DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) markers labelled with fluorescent dyes (blue, green, yellow, and red). Molecular geneticists have used this analysis method to identify 240 SSR (simple sequence repeat) markers for determining the genetic diversity of U.S. wheat. SSRs are segments of a genome (genetic sequence), composed of tandem repeats of a short sequence of nucleotides, usually 2-6 base pairs. Identification of SSRs is often used in breeding in order to select for, or against, certain genetic traits.
